You can host your website through Godaddy or HostGator as they provide the best hosting and customer care support services at various affordable rates.

It isn't worth it. You will need a dedicated IP. It will cost you more to host your own than it would to just use a hosting company. Why exactly do you want to host your own?

Initially you need to purchase a domain name from a hosting provider. Then use FTP software and host your website. You can find free downloadable FTP software online.

I recommend you to buy a URL (a web address) and separately buy a hosting package. Firefox has a plugin called fireftp which can be used to transfer the files of your website to the hot.

If you buy the URL as a package from the hosting provider, it will be complicated when you would want to move to a different hosting provider.

Annika, it is not much secure to reveal your IP to the world, not talking about thew need to run your computer 24/7 which will cost you electricity, but rather buy cheap hosting which has high uptime, and you can sleep without computer :P

On top of that, hosting companies have technical experts to take care of your servers and I believe dedicated servers are worth the Money...
