Hi..
Website Promotion is a general term. It is so general, in fact, that most communications that are not strictly advertising (paid and non-personal) are characterized as promotions. But this distinction is blurry at times, so looking for a clear definition is useless. It’s better to just recognize that there are many types of promotions.

Some promotions -- special events, sampling, rebates, and coupons, to name a few -- are aimed directly at consumers. The use of these promotions can typically be tied to the hierarchy of communication effects model.

Website Advertising is generally targeted at end consumer (as opposed to the channels of distribution). It can be used for many purposes, including establishing awareness, providing information for knowledge, and creating brand loyalty. In its knowledge role, advertising can communicate a positioning (or modify a positioning) and even promote new uses of a product (think "Orange Juice isn’t just for breakfast anymore").

Such a great information is sharing here and really this is very informative for people. But in single sentence we can tell that website promotion means give some information and tell try it, it provide benefits to you. And advertisement, this is especially for end users and mostly people are using visual effect for this to attract more customer and in advertisement whole detail are provided in text form.

You can have a promotion of a change going on with in a company for the employers, but it is not being advertised...
an advertisement is a way of visually communicating a specific focus to the general public. It is way to sell a product, or announce the new shop in the city, either way it gives you time to think about if you want to support the ad or not, it's an image to convince the general public to give something to the subject advertised in order to receive something else in return.

You may have heard and read that writing for the web is very different from writing for print publications. That's especially true if you're trying to promote your website.

A promotion is an advertising tool. A promotion is usually like a sale or like giving away freebies to bring in new customers. Advertising is any thing a company does to bring more recognition or sell new products, like paying for commercial ads, flyers, websites, promotions, etc.

Advertising is a paid form of mass communication. The Internet has become a significant destination for advertising, and a lot of money has moved from traditional advertising channels such as newspapers and magazines onto the Internet.

`Promotion` is wider than `Ad`. Also ad commonly costs money and `promotion` sometimes means`free promotion`. So this difference not so easy to explain.
